At Sunday’s Academy Awards, comedian Kate had everyone laughing as she and her Barbie co-star, America Ferrera, presented together and included a playful banter about Jurassic Park in their Oscars bit. The duo was presenting the awards for Best Documentary Short and Best Documentary Feature when Kate’s perfect comedic timing came out. “These awards honor the best in documentary filmmaking. Films that give us real stories about real life with past winners like Woodstock, Free Solo, and Inconvenient Truth,” America said before Kate chimed in and continued with: “Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, Jurassic World Dominion.” “Kate, no … those aren’t documentaries,” America quickly corrected Kate, leaving her in dismay. “… The dinosaurs weren’t real.” “Oh, America, not you too!” Kate joked.

There was a documentary about it,” America said as Kate clearly needed a moment to digest what she just heard. A baffled Kate then turned to the audience, in the middle of which was Jurassic Park’s maker, Steven. “Is this true?” Kate asked him. Steven nodded as he played along, prompting the audience to erupt in laughter. “Wow,” Kate said with slight disbelief. “But Jeff Goldblum is real, right?” “No,” America responded. “Then to whom have I been sending my tasteful nudes?” the ‘SNL’ alum asked. The camera then captured a traumatized-looking Steven, who pointed towards himself and nodded. Following their hilarious bit, the two announced that the winner of Best Documentary Short for the 2024 Oscars was The Last Repair Shop.

Fans online absolutely loved the playful banter onstage between Kate and America, with some calling Steven’s expression the best part of the night. “I DIED when it cut back to Spielberg,” one said on YouTube, while another added, “Spielberg’s facial expression is the best thing that happened this entire night I swear to god.” “I really loved how this year they turned to elegant sort of ‘classy’ non-offensive humor. The Spielberg bit is just insanely funny. It really raised back the prestige of the event to have this kind of humor back. Bravo!” read a third comment. Another comment said, “I really loved the show this year. It was entertaining, the right people won and I loved the way the awards were presented.”
