But while there are some good landlords in our world, there are also some who will not hesitate to kick you out the first chance they get just to increase their cash income. For example, one woman online shared how her friend was left without a home when his landlord decided to do exactly that. However, what the property owner didn’t calculate was how petty someone in their renter’s situation could get and the revenge that could come with it. Scroll down to read the full story! A guy was renting an apartment with a garden, which he tended to himself and made really beautiful
Share icon Image credits: @charlottor The woman who shared this mildly infuriating story with a sweet twist of petty revenge is X (Twitter) user charlottor, also known as Charlotte. She’s a London resident with a small but strong base of over 4,000 followers. However, while her daily posts might not all be followed by too many people, one of the recent stories blew up completely, garnering nearly 11 million views, with over 236,000 likes and more than 10,000 reposts. In this post, the woman shared a story that happened to her friend, who, not so long ago, was renting a flat with a garden that he had planted and cared for, making it a really beautiful thing to witness. One day, the landlord decided to kick out the man and use his garden to significantly raise the rent with a new contract and tenants
Noticing that the tenant had improved the place so much, the landlord saw a perfect opportunity to heavily bump up the price and make some extra cash. What he didn’t account for was the renter’s retaliation against such an action. The man decided to keep calm and sit still while the property owner took pictures of his garden, brought in visitors, and even got them to sign a contract. Only then did he dig out all of the plants and move out, leaving nothing but bare patches of dirt and a livid yet helpless landlord behind. It seems that a good deal of people on X (Twitter) were trying to justify the landlord’s actions, bashing the woman’s friend instead. However, when the same story was reposted to Reddit, the situation in the comment section was radically different. People were completely supportive of the guy and even shared similar stories of their own, showing that this was not a once-off occurrence. The guy waited for the pictures to be taken and the contract to be signed, only to dig out everything he had planted and move out, leaving the landlord furious
While there surely are plenty of very fair, helpful, and welcoming landlords around the world, some are the total opposite, and it is those stories that we hear about the most. But gambling on these chances and hoping that your property owner will be a decent person is a good idea, so Helen Pow of The Guardian suggested a few things one can do to ensure everything goes according to plan. Make sure everything is in order when you move in so you won’t have to pay for the mess previous tenants might have left. It also pays to report any problems you find during your tenancy and treat the property as if it were your own. Read the small print that might otherwise get you into unfortunate situations if you miss some crucial details a landlord might try to pass through unnoticed. Keep a good knowledge of your rights so you can stand your ground if something does not go as planned. In fact, as Janet Portman of Nolo wrote, a good housing lawyer can help you through a lot of these tough situations. These include but are not limited to:
Being wrongfully evicted.Experiencing discrimination from the landlord. The property owner falling short of their promises.Being refused necessary repairs.Having your personal property damaged due to the owner’s fault.Being injured or made ill because of the landlord’s carelessness.
In the end, we live in a world where the only person who can really take care of us is ourselves. So whether it’s eating well or ensuring that your landlord won’t suddenly raise your rent in an apartment where you just finished putting together the most wonderful garden, it’s all up to you. However, if you do find yourself in a situation like the one in our story, maybe ‘biting’ back in a smart way is not the worst idea either. What did you think about this story?
