The new data from Gallup and its partners, which powers the World Happiness Report, revealed that Finland topped the annual list of the happiest countries in the world. This is the seventh year in a row where Finland comfortably clinched the No. 1 spot. Finland was followed by Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Israel, and the Netherlands in that order.

The UN World Happiness Report is a survey of the state of global happiness that ranks countries by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. https://t.co/U3UTOqRrct — Finnish Government (@FinGovernment) March 20, 2024 The report, released on Wednesday, served bad news for the U.S., which plunged to the 23rd spot from No. 15 last year. This is the first time the U.S. has dropped out of the top 20 happiest countries list since the launch of the World Happiness Report 12 years ago. The researchers attribute part of this decline to how America’s youth (individuals aged under 30) perceive their lives. “In the US, happiness or subjective well being has decreased in all age groups, but especially for young adults,” Ilana Ron Levey, Gallup’s managing director, told CBS News.

It’s widely recognized that social support and feelings of loneliness are influential factors in determining overall happiness, and these dynamics differ across various age groups,” she added. “The quality of interpersonal relationships may impact the well being of younger and older individuals in distinct ways,” Ilana said.
