A few days ago, a Reddit user shared her story to the Malicious Compliance community telling her story of how, after being told to ‘dress better’ at work, she did a full transformation and looked extra fancy the following day, which made her manager and assistant manager furious. The post caught a lot of attention and collected 3K upvotes and over 200 comments. The original poster (OP) started her story by sharing that she works in a high-end store with a specific dress code, to which she always sticks and has never had any issues. However, one day, she got pulled back by the assistant manager (ASM) and got told she needed to ‘dress better’ and look ‘less homeless’. Confused, she tried asking her manager what that meant, but was simply told to listen to the ASM. OP noted that that night, she went online, found everything she needed, and the following day went to the mall and bought everything – blue dress, white gloves, fake pearl necklace and bracelet. She added that she spent that night doing her hair, ironing her dress, cleaning the pearls and practicing makeup. She woke up at 5:30 in the morning, did her hair, makeup, nails and got dressed. The woman walked into work smiling when her manager and ASM immediately pulled her into the back and yelled at her. “I don’t look homeless now, do I?” the woman answered. She also added that customers only wanted to talk to her as she looked fancy and it was a great day! A more driven and effective team, as well as a boost of confidence, can result from all employees dressing professionally. And, of course – in some industries – adhering to safety standards. However, while there are quite a few benefits of a dress code at work, not everybody enjoys it.
